Department of Urology
The Department of Urology at Eastern
Virginia Medical School is committed to supporting the mission of the
medical school to provide the highest caliber of specialized urologic
care in the region, to provide excellence in education, and to provide
advance knowledge through research.
The Department includes 20 full-time
faculty members and six community faculty members. We have a close
academic partnership with the Department of Urology at Portsmouth Naval
Hospital.
Educational Programs
Medical School
The Department actively participates in
the undergraduate educational programs for medical students. A
fourth-year clerkship (sub-internship) is offered as an elective.
Residency Education
The Department sponsors an
ACGME-approved Urology residency training program and is involved in teaching
Urology to primary care and general surgery residents at Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Postgraduate Education
Community physicians are invited to
participate in continuing medical education in urology via weekly grand
rounds, guest lectureships, and a monthly journal club. The Department
frequently sponsors continuing medical education seminars for area
physicians of all specialties.
During the academic year, the
Department also hosts many visiting physicians from both the U.S. and
many other countries.
Clinical Services
Patient Care
Urologic services are provided for
patients at the Sentara Hospitals Southside, Children’s Hospital of
The
King’s Daughters, Lake Taylor Hospital and Chesapeake General Hospital.
The Department operates through the offices of Urology of Virginia and
Children’s Surgical Specialty Group-Children’s Urology.
Urology Grand Rounds
Patients with complex disease and diagnostic or therapeutic challenges
are discussed at our weekly clinical conferences that are attended by
residents, students, faculty members and community physicians. A monthly
multidisciplinary urology tumor board addresses challenging oncology
cases.
Research
Members of the Department of Urology
actively collaborate with investigators at Eastern Virginia Medical
School and Old Dominion University. Clinical trials are conducted in
concert with the EVMS Department of Microbiology and Molecular Cell
Biology. Visit the Virginia
Prostate Center site for more information. Urology of Virginia also maintains an active research
department sponsoring trials with regional cancer research groups and
various private foundations and pharmaceutical companies. Top |
