Rotations for General Surgery
residents occur at five hospitals: |

Sentara
Norfolk General Hospital has 644 beds and is the major
tertiary care hospital for the Hampton Roads region. SNGH
is the ‘core’ hospital for residency education. There are 30,000
visits annually to the ambulatory care center; 43,000 visits
annually to the emergency room; and more than 2,390 annual visits to
the General Surgery outpatient clinic. |

Sentara
Leigh Hospital has 256 beds. The surgical service is
composed of private patients, providing a broad educational and
clinical experience in the field of general surgery. This
opportunity also provides for education in endocrine surgery and
non-cardiothoracic surgery. Junior residents learn principles of
surgery, including pre- and post-operative care; perform minor
surgical procedures; and assist in major operations. Chief Residents
have extensive operative experience under faculty supervision. |

Sentara Bayside Hospital has 230 beds. The surgical service
is composed of private patients, providing experience in general
surgery and surgical specialties such as vascular surgery,
orthopedics, and gynecology. |

Children's
Hospital of The King's Daughters, Norfolk
has 156 beds, providing care to patients ranging in age from birth
to 20. Among the services at CHKD are a 28-bed Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit, an eight-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, an 18-bed
Adolescent Unit, a 10-bed Infectious Disease Unit, and emergency
room facilities. There are 36,000 children treated annually in the
general and specialty outpatient clinics. CHKD provides for
residency education in neonatal and pediatric surgery. |
