The General Surgery Residency Program
at the Eastern Virginia Medical School is designed to educate clinical
surgeons for a career in the practice of General Surgery. The program
offers supervised education in the art and science of surgery so that,
upon completion of the fifth year of responsibility, the resident is able
to practice independently and is eligible to sit for
the American Board of Surgery examination.
There are 13 residents at the junior
level and four residents each at the third, fourth, and fifth levels.
One or two residents are engaged in full time research annually.
Fellowship opportunities include Vascular Surgery, Trauma, and
Critical Care.

The program is
under the directorship of the Chairman of the EVMS Department of Surgery, and the Directors of Surgery of
the participating hospitals (see Training Sites
for descriptions):
- Sentara
Norfolk General Hospital
- Sentara Leigh
Hospital
- Sentara Bayside Hospital
- Children's
Hospital of The King's Daughters
The primary teaching hospital, Sentara
Norfolk General, has the region's only Level I Shock Trauma Center,
which provides an outstanding trauma experience for residents. The
unique blend of academic and private surgeons at these multiple sites
provides an opportunity for residents to gain a wide variety of
operative and patient management experience. |
