Clinical rotation performance:
The resident’s performance is evaluated upon completion of each
rotation by the faculty and chief resident of the service.
Biannual Reviews: Each
resident meets individually with the Chairman of the Department of
Surgery to discuss mutual concerns, performance, and career goals. The
Chairman meets on an ad hoc basis with residents for counseling and
resolution of any problems.
Residency Review Committee:
Each resident’s performance is discussed at quarterly meetings of the
Residency Review Committee and at regular faculty and educational
committee meetings.
Oral Exams: During the third,
fourth, and fifth years, two faculty members orally examine residents.
These 30-minute exams test cognitive knowledge and allow for the demonstration
of logical and sound clinical reasoning and problem solving skills.
Annual In-Training Exam: Each
resident is required to take the annual American Board of Surgery
In-Training/Surgical Basic Science Exam and is expected to score at or
above the 30th percentile. Residents are counseled on noted strengths
and deficiencies. A plan for study is developed as needs dictate.
