The Early Match (San Francisco Match)

Ophthalmology, Neurology, Neurological Surgery and Plastic Surgery do not participate in the NRMP and have "early match" dates in January. All of these post-graduate two-year positions are handled by the San Francisco Matching Program. These early match results are announced in time for you to withdraw from the NRMP match if you need to do so. Urology does match early; however, it is done through the NRMP.

If you are applying for one of the early match programs, you will be required to submit your match list in early January. Going unmatched, however, is not the end of the line. You will be notified of the results of the early matches approximately two to three weeks before the deadline for submission of rank lists for the regular NRMP Match.

The Military Match

This match is held by the Navy, Army, and Air Force. Students should contact their military branch's GME office for application instructions. Students may want to consider simultaneously applying in the civilian match through NRMP. If a student matches through the military match in December, then students must withdraw from the NRMP.

The Couples Match

The first step is to decide to which programs you and your partner want to apply. If one of you is more or less competitive in your respective specialty choice than the other, then this must be taken into account, especially when applying to more competitive residency programs. Apply to a larger than average number of programs, both to increase your chances to finding the perfect residency and to increase your chances of matching. Keep in mind that, with larger numbers of programs to choose from, it might be easier for you to find a place acceptable to you and your partner.

When registering for the NRMP, you will be able to identify your desire to participate in the couples match, and include both your and your partner's specialty area. Although you can indicate that you are couple matching on residency applications, you should also indicate it in your personal statement and during your interviews.

The deadline is the same for couples as for individuals. Each partner will input their rank order list separately via NRMP. When you enter your rank list, you will be prompted to enter your partner's name and ID number as well.
