Letters of Recommendation

Tips

  1. Ask early (June), bring a copy of your CV, official transcript, personal statement, picture, and the ERAS cover sheet with detailed instructions. You can print additional copies from the ERAS Web site.
  2. It is better to ask someone who knows you than someone with a big name. They should have interacted with you sufficiently so that they can provide specific information concerning your cognitive knowledge, commitment, and work habits. At least one should be from someone in your specialty area.
  3. Diversify your letters if possible (i.e., chairman, nationally recognized residency directors, clerkship directors). Exclude residents, friends, clergy.
  4. Follow up to see if the letter was sent.
  5. Write thank-you letters, and let them know where you matched.
  6. MyERAS software will not allow you to send more than four letters of recommendation to one program. Most programs require three letters. Be sure to follow the specific instructions from each program.
  7. Some programs require that one letter be from a department chair.
