General Information and Policies
The primary responsibility for
the funding of your education rests with you and your family. However,
in some cases, the amount that you and your family can contribute
is not sufficient to meet all of the costs of attending EVMS.
The first thing
you can do is to make sure that you have a good
credit rating. Request
a copy of your credit report from one of the three major credit bureaus -
Equifax,
Experian, or
Trans Union. The credit bureau will provide
you with a copy of your credit report and if any problems exist, inform you how you
might correct them. Your ability to receive some types of financial assistance may be
hampered or even denied if you are not creditworthy.
The second thing
we ask you to do is to be creative in your financing. Seek
other sources of funding before applying for financial assistance
offered by EVMS. Seek funding from extended family, corporations, religious
organizations, and local service organizations. Refer to the
Scholarship section
on our website.
The third thing that we ask you to do is to learn how to budget and live frugally.
The Association of American Medical Colleges has provided an excellent
resource to teach students the importance of
budgeting.
Dollars borrowed now may triple by the time you repay them. If
you can cut your budget by only $100 a month, multiplied by the number
of months of your program, that is $1,200 to $4,800 you will not
have to borrow, and possibly $3,600 to $14,400 that you will not
have to pay back later.
After you have
figured out what your family can realistically contribute, searched
for other sources of funds, and pledged to yourself to make a budget
each year and to stick to it, then we will help you apply for EVMS,
state and federal funding. Next step - check out the
'Application Process.'
