Standard Student Budget

The student budget is based on the student's year in school, degree/ certificate program, length of academic year, and state residency. Living expenses for the student budget are determined after surveying the student body and comparing results to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. The student budget is finalized at the end of April when the Board of Visitors determines tuition costs for the next year.

Adjustments to the Standard Student Budget

During the course of an academic year, circumstances may arise that cause a student to need financial assistance in excess of the standard student budget. In certain situations, the student budget may be expanded to include additional items.

Student Budget Adjustment Policy

Effective 2003/04

Dependent Care Allowance – Adjustments for dependent care allowance will be $4,400 for the first child and $3,000 for each additional child. Adjustments will not be granted for a dependent spouse unless s/he is physically unable to work. The dependent child must be included in the student’s household size as reported on the FAFSA and must be residing with the student. This figure may be added to the cost of the student budget upon receipt of a written request from the student and documentation of dependents.

Medical and Dental Expenses – Adjustments for medical and dental expenses will be made for expenses that are not covered by insurance and are deemed necessary. Adjustments for medical insurance premiums will be made for dependents.  Expenses will be added to the cost of the student budget upon receipt of a written request from the student, documentation of medical expenses and/or documentation of dependents.

Transportation Adjustments for transportation will be made only if the student provides documentation that they have spent more for transportation expenses (insurance, car maintenance, gasoline) than what was allotted in the standard budget.Federal regulations do not allow for car payments to be added to the student budget. Expenses will be added to the cost of the student budget upon receipt of a written request from the student and documentation of expenses.

Loan Fees – Adjustments for loan fees deducted from Stafford loans will be made.  Fees for loans received will be approved only for those loans ALREADY received, not those pending disbursement. Expenses will be added to the cost of the student budget upon request of the student. Written notification is not necessary.

Away Electives – Adjustments for reasonable expenses incurred during away electives for students will be made only if the student provides documentation of required books and registration fees. Expenses will be added to the cost of the student budget upon receipt of a written request from the student and documentation of the expenses.

Residency Interview Travel – Federal regulations do not allow the expenses a student may incur due to interviewing for residency placement to be added to any student budget.

Personal Computer – Adjustments for the purchase of a personal computer (excludes accessories) for use during the academic year (can be purchased in summer with plans to use in fall term) will be made once during the student’s academic career, not to exceed $2,200 (PDA excluded). Expenses will be added to the cost of the student budget upon receipt of a written request from the student and documentation of the expenses.
