The Department of Psychiatry offers a full continuum
of specialized programs and services to meet the mental health care needs of
Hampton Roads residents. The department also strives to meet the referral needs of
clinicians from around the Commonwealth and the Mid-Atlantic region. The services
available from the department represent the latest research and clinical knowledge
in psychiatry.
The Department of Psychiatry has eight psychiatrists, nine psychologists, and
four art therapists on the full-time faculty, and 89 community faculty members.
Because of the diversity and qualifications of the faculty, the educational
offerings are diverse and on the cutting edge of new developments in the field of
mental health. A wide range of subspecialty inpatient services, and an array of
outpatient services including subspecialty clinics, are provided through the
department.
Programs and services offered in our outpatient setting include the Hofheimer
Outpatient Clinic, the Children's Neurodevelopmental Center, the Neuropsychology
Center, the Behavioral Medicine Clinic and the Stress Disorders Research Laboratory,
Art Psychotherapy Associates, and the Sleep Disorders Center.
The department addresses the full range of psychiatric disorders, including all
major psychiatric illnesses, chemical dependency, and general issues in living. In
addition, the faculty is skilled at treating all age groups, offering evaluation
and treatment services for adults, adolescents, and children. Our faculty provides
intensive and time-limited or brief psychotherapy in individual, family, and group
modalities. Psychological and neuropsychological testing are provided, as well as
specialized biofeedback, pharmacological management, and consultation liaison services.
