| Family physicians understand the
importance of ongoing patient education about the aging process, as
well as the importance of early detection of medical conditions when
they are most easily treated. Educating patients and their
caregivers about preventing injury and improving nutrition has
shown to significantly decrease illness and even death. Simple
evaluation of a patient's flexibility and vision can identify those
at greater risk for falls and offer appropriate intervention when
necessary. Identifying hearing loss can prevent social isolation,
depression and an overall decline in the quality of life.
Immunizations have proven beneficial for older adults, yet fewer
than 30 percent receive vaccinations that may prevent
life-threatening illnesses.
Our family physicians with special training in care of the
elderly can help their older patients live happier, healthier
lives. |
