Our residency has always been an active part of the Portsmouth community. We are the health care leaders in Portsmouth.
Helping the homeless in our community
Portsmouth Family Medicine (PFM) recently received a large federal grant to support several community outreach activities. These activities also form the basis of our longitudinal community medicine experience.
Prospective residents who have an interest in community service will find many opportunities to participate in and coordinate various programs.
- Domestic Violence Shelter - This clinic is operated by residents at a local safe-house for abused women and their children.
- Holiday House – While on their outpatient rotation with a local pediatrician, residents rotate through the Holiday House, a community-based Intermediate Care Facility/Mental Retardation dedicated to providing the best rehabilitative services in a home-like environment through quality health care, therapy, and educational opportunities with advocacy for community involvement. This allows introduction and mentoring in this special needs area, and opportunities to interact with family members to better understand this special group of individuals.
- Homeless Clinic – Developed by a former resident, this clinic is operated through the winter months.
- PAGO Games – PFM helps coordinate events at these local Senior Olympic games.
- Sports Physicals – PFM residents provide pre-participation sports physicals for underserved students in Portsmouth and the surrounding area.
- TAR Wars – Residents give presentations to local middle school students as part of this national anti-smoking program.
- “What’s Up, Doc” Program – The residency director hosts this television show for seniors. Residents appear as guest speakers.
