EVMS Psychiatry - Current Clinical Trials

Below is a list of current clinical trials being conducted within the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences.  All advertised clinical trials have been approved by the EVMS Institutional Review Board (IRB).

 

1:

Study Title: Evaluation of Galantamine, A Positive Allosteric Modulator (PAM) of Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors (nAChRs) and Cholinesterase Inhibitor (CHEI), in Adolescents and Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs)

Protocol Summary: A study for a new investigational treatment for the social, emotional, and behavioral problems in Autism Spectrum Disorders

Basic Eligibility Criteria:

    1. Be healthy young adults between the age of 12 and 25
    2. Have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders
    3. Have been on stable medication for at least 4 weeks

2:

Study Title: Donepezil's effect on cardiac function in patients with Alzheimer's Disease through an in vivo, non invasive measure of peripheral neurocholinergic function: Relation to therapeutic efficacy

Protocol Summary: The study will include a baseline session and 2 follow-up sessions that will take place 3 and 6 months after the initial visit. Both sessions will take no more than 90 minutes to complete. The baseline session will include informed consent, a psychosocial evaluation, medical/psychiatric history, mental and thinking tests (cognitive measures), electrocardiogram (EKG) to measure heart rate, blood pressure, and a blood sample (baseline session only). Follow-up sessions will include any changes in medical history since the baseline session, mental and thinking tests, and an EKG

Basic Eligibility Criteria:

      1. Aged 60-85
      2. Taking the medication Donepezil (Aricept) for less than 2 years but have started the medication prior to the first session
      3. Diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease
      4. Free of heart problems such as stroke or arrhythmias

Study Title: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in treating Psychiatric disorders

Protocol Summary: The goal of the study is to establish a data bank with information routinely employed in clinical practice on patients receiving Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) for the treatment of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral disorders (e.g., Major Depressive Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). This data bank will be used to monitor and evaluate factors that may optimize or possibly hinder the effectiveness of TMS treatment in humans

Basic Eligibility Criteria:

      1. Adult (age 18-89) subject receiving TMS treatment at EVMS

Study Title: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to Improve Emotion Regulation in Adults with Autism

Protocol Summary: A study involving social group sessions for emotion regulation in Autism Spectrum Disorder

Basic Eligibility Criteria:

    1. Be healthy young adults between the age of 16 and 25
    2. Have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders
    3. Be willing to maintain a stable treatment plan

5:

Study Title: Relation between Cognitive Function, Walking Ability and Balance for Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Down syndrome

Protocol Summary: Motor Coordination Study

Basic Eligibility Criteria:

    1. Be healthy young adults between the age of 16 and 25
    2. Have been on stable medication for at least 4 weeks

Participants are needed from each group:

    1. Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder
    2. Diagnosis of Down syndrome
    3. Persons with neither of the above diagnoses and no person or family history of major psychiatric or substance abuse disorders
