Welcome to the Department of Physiological Sciences at EVMS. Our mission is to improve human health by educating health care professionals and scientists and by advancing biomedical knowledge through cutting edge basic and translational research.
The educational focus of the Department is to provide students with an integrated understanding of physiology, pharmacology and biochemistry that underpin cell structure and function, the mechanisms, interactions and applications of drugs, as well as metabolism and nutrition that are the foundations of clinical medicine.
The Department utilizes contemporary and innovative technologies in its didactic lectures and small-group and team based clinical problem solving sessions and laboratories and encourages students to apply critical thinking and develop patient-oriented problem-solving skills.
Our Department has broad basic and applied research programs in diabetes and obesity, human reproduction, fetal-neonatal development, neurodegeneration and aging, heart disease, hypertension, and ocular pharmacology. We have established collaborative efforts with clinical colleagues that enhance translation of basic/applied research to the bedside and that address major health issues of citizens locally and nationally.
