Healthy Portsmouth

Healthy Portsmouth is a health and wellness initiative led by a group of community leaders committed to changing the policies, systems and environments that affect its neighborhoods, schools and workplaces in order to improve the health of citizens in Portsmouth. Portsmouth was selected as an ACHIEVE community as the result of a successful collaborative grant submitted by the Consortium for Infant and Child Health (CINCH) and a select group of community leaders in Portsmouth, which later became the Healthy Portsmouth Leadership Team. ACHIEVE stands for Action Communities for Health, Innovation, and Environmental change, and selected national organizations collaborate with CDC to enhance the ability of local communities to develop and implement strategies that will help prevent or manage health-risk factors for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, obesity, and arthritis. The grant was awarded by the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors as part of a program funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Since starting, a comprehensive assessment of various organizations in Portsmouth and the community-at-large has been conducted; a community action plan has been developed; and a coalition of residents has been created to improve and support healthy living in Portsmouth. Healthy Portsmouth focuses on improving the walking environment to encourage residents to walk in their neighborhoods; promoting smoke-free/tobacco-free policies on public properties; supporting children's health and wellness where they live play and go to school; providing reliable information on healthy activities, events and resources for residents through a community-wide media campaign and encouraging breastfeeding-friendly policies and places.
