Eileen Althouse has been with the EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center since the Center’s founding over 20 years ago. She is a Registered Nurse, Licensed Clinical Nurse Specialist and a Certified Diabetes Educator. Eileen received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing form the University of Delaware and her Master’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Virginia. She has served as an officer on the Board of Eastern Virginia Association of Diabetes Educators and is a long standing member of the American Association of Diabetes Educators. She works as the Program Coordinator for the Center’s Diabetes Self Management Education Program. This program has had ADA Recognition since 1995. Eileen provides individualized counseling on living with diabetes and teaches group classes as well. These sessions focus on motivating people with diabetes to improve their lifestyle by controlling their diabetes with nutrition, exercise, medication and stress management. Eileen has dedicated her nursing career to assisting people with diabetes improve their overall health and incorporate diabetes self care into their lives. She believes an educated patient will live a longer and healthier life.

Matt Bourcier began his research as a student in Eastern Virginia Medical School’s Master of Physician Assistant program from December 1999 until his graduation in 2001. After working in Occupational Medicine for five years, he rejoined the Strelitz Diabetes Center to begin working in the Neuroendocrine and Clinical Research Units in May 2006. He received his B.S. in Biology and B.A. in Chemistry from Virginia Tech and has maintained certification as a Physician Assistant since 2001. His areas of interest include the diagnosis/management of diabetic neuropathies and neuroendocrine tumors. Matt is a strong advocate of both professional and patient education. His findings have been published in peer-reviewed journals such as The Journal of Family Practice, Therapeutics and Clinical Risk Management, and The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. He is an Associate Faculty Member of F1000 for Multiple Endocrine Disorders & Neoplasias and was a guest speaker at The American Diabetes Association convention in June 2009 in New Orleans.

Kim Moloney earned her nursing degree from Radford University. Teaching patients has always been a big part of her job. She worked on a surgical floor providing patient care and pre op and post op education. She learned that if patients know what to expect (and what is expected of them), their hospital stays went better. After having her children, she began working for Portsmouth Health Department in Home Health. This experience really opened her eyes to many different home environments and income levels. She was amazed how some people did so much with so little, but it also made me take a "practical approach" to patient care. I also started a group diabetes education class for the medical clinic patients. While working in Portsmouth, she became involved with the formation EVADE (Eastern Virginia Association of Diabetes Educators). Eileen Althouse, RN was also one of the founding members. Through this group, she was offered a position at the Diabetes Institutes (now the Strelitz Diabetes Center) in 1989... and never looked back! Her primary job continues to be education, and she tries to make learning fun since having a chronic condition is far from fun. She enjoys giving patients the "tools" they need to live their best life.

Jean O’Brian has been with the EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center for almost twenty years. She is a Registered Nurse, Certified Diabetes Educator and a Certified Insulin Pump Trainer for every device currently marketed. Jean received her nursing diploma from Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and Old Dominion University. She has been the Coordinator of the Insulin Pump Program since its inception, having started the program just after she arrived. Since that time, she has started over 300 patients on insulin pumps. The Strelitz Diabetes Center Insulin Pump Program is the only comprehensive program in the Tidewater area that provides not only patient education but also clinical management and family support for this type of intensive diabetes treatment. Jean also provides individualized counseling to patients and families on living with diabetes, with the overall goal of improving diabetes self care. She is a member of the Eastern Virginia Association of Diabetes Educators and the American Diabetes Association. It has been her long time commitment to make a difference in the lives of people with diabetes through education, motivation and provision of state of the art technology.

Bio:
Phyllis Woodson, a graduate of Virginia Tech, is a Registered Dietitian/Diabetes Nutrition Specialist and a Certified Diabetes Educator. She has worked at EVMS since 1990 and spends one day a week at Maternal-Fetal Medicine working with high-risk pregnancies including gestational diabetes. She is experienced in medical nutrition therapy and diabetes management, behavior modification, and blood glucose pattern management including insulin adjustment. She provides nutrition consultation in many areas including diabetes, weight management, hyperlipidemia, renal nutrition, gastric bypass surgery, pregnancy, gastroparesis, and celiac disease. She works with the Diabetes Self Management Education program for individuals and groups and lectures in many areas including the above mentioned topics. She is frequently interviewed by the print and electronic media. She enjoys helping individuals with diabetes improve their overall health and well-being and integrate diabetes self care into their daily routine. Her interest is in improving resiliency and longevity. She has served as President of the Virginia Dietetic Association, on the board of the American Association of Diabetes Educators, and on the Virginia Diabetes Council since 1998.
