Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) has long-standing research programs in areas such as geriatrics, head and neck surgery, ophthalmology, pediatrics, reproductive medicine and sleep medicine. Cancer, diabetes and obesity, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease and maternal/child health are also important research areas.
EVMS is the largest biomedical research institution in southeastern Virginia. Research has increased steadily at EVMS and it is an integral part of the medical school's mission of educating medical professionals and improving health care. The research receives support from a variety of foundations,as well as state and federal sponsors, including the NIH. Currently, there are over one hundred faculty conducting basic and clinical research at EVMS focused mainly in areas where the community has pressing needs. Our research mandate is to benefit patients by applying the knowledge obtained through basic and clinical research.
