Epidemiology-Biostatistics (Epi-Bio) Core National Center for Collaboration in Medical Modeling and Simulation A joint project of Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS), Old Dominion University (ODU) and a variety of academic, governmental and commercial partners, the NCCMMS works to improve the quality and quantity of medical care available to U.S. military forces. Cardiovascular and Renal Research Center The Cardiovascular and Renal Research Center was established to promote research and discussion on topics related to cardiovascular and renal physiology and pathophysiology. Contraceptive Research and Development (CONRAD) CONRAD seeks to develop better, safer, and more acceptable methods of fertility regulation, with an emphasis on suitability for use in developing countries. Priority is given to moving promising leads through Phase I and II clinical trials. Glennan Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology A comprehensive program designed to promote wellness and prevent premature frailty in the elderly through a focused effort to train physicians in the special needs of the elderly, a concentrated research program, and an emphasis on geriatrics in patient care. Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine Home of the nation's first in-vitro fertilization clinic and today's foremost reproductive medicine program, offering nearly every form of infertility treatment available for men and women and conducting research in menopause, infertility, contraception, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, and more. Pediatric Clinical Research Unit The Department of Pediatrics Clinical Research Unit conducts clinical investigations of new medication, therapies, infant formulas and vaccines. Scientific Center for Biodefense The mission of the Scientific Center for Biodefense is to develop strategies, techniques, interventions, and tools to prevent or reduce the impact of a bioattack within the large population centers and military installations encompassed in the Hampton Roads area. With Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the SDC provides the full range of diagnostic and treatment services for sleep disorders and conducts research on normal and problem sleepers. A comprehensive program providing education, in-patient and outpatient care, and research focused on minimizing complications of diabetes and finding a cure based on stimulating the growth of new islet cells. Thomas R. Lee Center for Ocular Pharmacology The mission of the Thomas R. Lee Center for Ocular Pharmacology is to develop treatments for chronic and blinding diseases of the eye, particularly glaucoma. The Virginia Center for Breast Cancer Awareness The Virginia Center for Breast Cancer Awareness was established in 2001 to foster awareness of current breast cancer screening guidelines, promote earlier detection of cancer, and inform the public about ongoing breast cancer research here at EVMS. A joint program with Sentara Cancer Institute, conducting multidisciplinary clinical and basic research into more effective treatments and more precise diagnostic assessment for prostate and other urological cancers. The mission of the Office for the Promotion of Excellence in Research and Academia is to support and facilitate the growth and success of research activities in the Department of Medicine. Microbiology and Molecular Cell Biology Research activities of the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Cell Biology focus on cancer, viral infections, and host defense. The department performs research in the areas of neonatology and the recovery of function in the central and peripheral nervous systems. The Department of Pediatrics research activities are present throughout the Department in many clinics as well as in the Pediatric Research facility at E.V. Williams Hall, which focuses on basic and clinical care research in pediatric immunology, epidemiology, infectious diseases, pharmacology genetics, and neonatology, including a long-term, international study of the properties of human milk. Both in vivo and in vitro technologies are utilized in various research programs which continue to provide new information regarding the mechanisms underlying the ontogenesis, detection and treatment of various diseases. Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences A variety of research efforts in the department relate to particular research expertise in personality and neuropsychological assessment, behavior medicine and the many academic programs the department sponsors. |
