Ready for Residency

By the time our students are your residents, they’re more than prepared for the challenge. EVMS graduates excel in the fast-paced and intense world of medicine, placing them ahead of the learning curve. You benefit from residents who come ready to roll up their sleeves and scrub in. Our students:

  • Score above the USMLE national mean.
  • Are educated in a culture of service learning.
  • Are trained in an integrated health system and a variety of hospitals.
  • Are adept at transitions of care and the use of electronic health records.
  • Are experienced with diverse patient populations.

Leading-edge ultrasound skills

Our ultrasound curriculum

With ultrasound integrated in their curriculum from the first year, EVMS graduates know the principles and applications of ultrasound imaging inside out. Our faculty are nationally recognized for their early adoption of ultrasound into the medical curriculum. They encourage its use at the bedside and are finding new uses — such as EVMS-led research that is speeding the diagnosis of serious fetal heart problems. Our students are prepared to use this technology as soon as they begin clinical rotations.

Honed listening & medical skills

Diverse patient population

EVMS graduates step into your program as valued members of your medical team. You spend less time teaching fundamentals and more time sharing your specialized knowledge of medicine. That’s because our clinical training starts immediately in the first year with full participation in clinical service by the third year. Unlike most medical schools, EVMS does not own a hospital. That is advantageous for our students who train in a variety of hospitals and the more than 150 partner clinical practices across Hampton Roads.

Intensive knowledge & extensive training

Only perfect practice makes perfect. EVMS students master critical skills through the use of cutting-edge ModSim technology and frequent simulated clinical interactions. EVMS is:

  • Home to The National Center for Collaboration in Medical Modeling and Simulation
  • A national leader in the standardized patient program — training students, residents and mid-professionals from over 40 well-known institutions and organizations including Duke University School of Medicine, George Washington University and the American College of Physicians
  • The creator of the Automated Intelligent Mentoring System (AIMS) which helps students learn and practice clinical procedures without the need of a trained teacher to oversee the student and critique performance. This means that our students can practice as often and whenever they want in order to perfect their techniques.

Compassionate & collegial caregiving

Community-focused medicine

At EVMS, education is about more than books and laboratories — it is about making a difference in people’s lives. That’s why we formed the M. Foscue Brock Institute for Community and Global Health. This interdisciplinary institute integrates educational, clinical, public health and research enterprises at EVMS, coordinates existing and proposed community outreach programs, and improves the health of the communities in which our students learn and serve.

Our stellar faculty

Abby Van Voorhees, MD

When our students graduate, they leave us with more than a white coat. They leave with confidence. They begin their residencies with hands-on knowledge and with skills learned by working side-by-side with some of the best medical minds in the nation. Our faculty win awards and research grants, lead professional medical organizations and are highly respected by their peers. But most importantly for you, they understand the importance of training residents you can count on.

Hear from our graduates

EVMS graduates have the skills and training you are looking for, but don't just take our word for it. Let our graduates tell you how EVMS prepared them for residency programs at some the country's most prestigious hospitals and medical centers and their careers in medicine.

Harvard Researcher Hanna Gaggin, MD, MPH

EVMS MD graduates excel in the fast-paced and intense world of medicine, placing them ahead of the learning curve. It’s why they match in residencies at places like Johns Hopkins University and Harvard Medical School, and it’s why they go on to have successful careers in medicine.

EVMS Match Day 2016

We know our graduates' careers don't end with us. That's why we spend four years training our students how to be excellent residents and doctors — highly capable and willing to listen, learn and work as part of a team. It's clear that residency directors like what they see. This year, 130 EVMS graduates were matched to residency training programs at several of the nation's most prestigious teaching hospitals, including: Duke University, Georgetown University, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, and the University of Washington (Seattle) — just to name a few.
