Educational Goals and Objectives for the Ultrasound Rotation

The following goals and objectives should be used in the evaluation of residents rotating through Ultrasound. Competency by PGY level should be based on these criteria:

PGY I

  • Able to identify normal anatomy on Ultrasound
  • Begins to detect most abnormalities on real-time and teach-produced images.
  • Knowledge of basics of US physics
  • Able to locate Web sites with teaching files

PGY II

  • All the above and able to perform paracentesis and thoracentesis with help
  • Able to detect all but subtle abnormalities on US
  • Able to identify technical factors to improve quality of exam
  • Knowledge of differential diagnosis in GU, hepatobiliary, GYN, pancreatic and splenic diseases
  • Basic knowledge of Doppler US
  • Demonstrates compassionate communications skills

PGY III

  • All above and able to identify common abnormalities and pathologies on OB US, able to perform US guided biopsy with help, improved ddx on US pathologies.
  • Able to effectively communicate with referring clinicians/residents.

PGY IV

  • All above and able to perform US procedures without assistance
  • Able to detect all but most subtle US abnormalities
  • Able to completely produce US examination and understand how poor quality can hamper proper diagnosis
