Dept. of Radiology Residency Program: Education

Educational Goals and Objectives for the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program

The mission of the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program is to develop within the resident the interpretive, interpersonal and procedural skills necessary to perform as a competent radiologist and to encourage critical thinking applied to medical knowledge to allow development of a life-long process for improvement of radiologic practices.

The resident will develop the interpersonal skills to provide compassionate patient care and the ability to communicate effectively with clinicians. By teaching, attending example, and faculty mentoring, the residents will exhibit professionalism and ethical behavior as well as a caring attitude for their patients. The resident will develop consultative skills to guide the appropriate choice of examinations to practice cost-effective, quality patient care. Early exposure to research will allow the residents to consider fellowship training or academic radiology as a career.

At the end of training, the resident should be able to interpret all diagnostic procedures and be able to perform therapeutic and diagnostic interventions as well as be aware of more unusual procedures that are new or investigational.

Goals and Objectives

  1. Prepare residents for the independent practice of radiology
    1. Provide graduated resident responsibility through close faculty supervision in the first PGY year.
    2. Give more senior residents expanded responsibilities commensurate with their competence, knowledge, and experience.
    3. Prepare residents for continuous professional development through independent learning, problem solving, and assessment of skills and knowledge.
    4. Assure procedure proficiencies.

  2. Promote scholarly activities by residents and faculty
    1. Individual resident research projects mentored by faculty
    2. Presentation of projects at national meetings
