Educational Goals and Objectives for the
Gastrointestinal Radiology Rotation
The following goals and objectives
should be used in the evaluation of residents rotating through GI.
Competency by PGY level should be based on these criteria:
PGY I
- Review patient chart and understand indications for the examination
- Interview the patient for appropriate history and physical findings
- Understand normal radiologic and
fluoroscopic anatomy, know the essential contraindications for GI
examinations
- Understand contrast media and
pharmacologic interventions for common GI examinations
- Perform high quality examinations
and become technically proficient in GI fluoroscopy
- Interpret basic studies and
recognize normal and abnormal findings
- Understand basic radiation
protection
- Read basic GI texts and use
teaching files to supplement clinical case material
- Provide clear, concise, complete,
and grammatically correct reports and notify referring physicians of
urgent or important findings
- Be able to identify Web-based
learning sites
PGY II
- All the above and continue to hone
and improve skills in performing and interpreting GI examinations
- Tailor examinations to answer
appropriate clinical questions
- Develop appropriate differential
diagnosis based on imaging findings
- Correlate GI fluoroscopic exams
with other imaging modalities
- Resident should be able to perform
and interpret most GI studies
- Provide case material for teaching
files and read GI reference texts and GI literature in journals
PGY III/IV
- All above and provide consultation with referring physicians
- Be
able to teach junior residents and medical students
- Read GI journals
and be prepared to pass the ABR certifying examination in GI
radiology
