Educational Goals and Objectives for the Emergency Radiology Rotation

The following goals and objectives should be used in the evaluation of residents on the night-time Emergency Radiology rotation. Competency by PGY level should be based on these criteria:

PGY I

  • Able to identify abnormalities on plain films and imaging studies for most cases
  • Knowledge of acute brain abnormalities such as CVA and hemorrhage
  • Able to identify cervical spine abnormalities
  • Able to evaluate the acute abdomen on CT
  • Communicates directly emergent and urgent findings
  • Completes QI/QA worksheet after each night

PGY II

  • All the above and identifies all but most subtle abnormalities on plain film and imaging studies
  • Knowledge of common injury patterns
  • Appropriately chooses imaging workup of plain film abnormalities
  • Effectively communicates with clinical staff/residents
  • Properly documents communication of discrepancies on QI/QA worksheet

PGY III/IV

  • All above and aids Trauma team in choosing cost effective work-up based on mechanism of injury and initial screening study findings
  • Identifies subtle abnormalities on plain film and imaging exams
  • Effectively synthesizes findings for concise interpretation and organized readout
