Educational Goals and Objectives for the
Chest Radiology Rotation
The following goals and objectives
should be used in the evaluation of residents rotating though Chest
radiology. Competency by PGY level should be based on these criteria.
CT of the chest (and MRI) will be covered in CT rotations, but may be
important for imaging correlation.
PGY I
- Knowledge-Based Objectives:
At the end of the rotation, the resident should be able to identify
normal anatomy of plain film chest, identify and/or describe common
variants of normal, demonstrate basic knowledge of findings of
common medical conditions such as pneumonia and CHF, demonstrate an
understanding of pathologic terminology related to the chest; able
to identify Web sites with on-line teaching.
- Technical Skills:
Distinguish normal from abnormal structures on a chest radiograph,
dictate reports that are concise, communicate verbally with
referring physicians and house staff about radiographic findings,
recognize PTX.
- Decision-Making/Value Judgment
Skills: Identify emergent and urgent findings and appropriately
contact house staff; determine when repeat examination is needed
because of technical inadequacy; begin to use correlative imaging.
PGY II
- Knowledge-Based Objectives:
All the above and at the end of the rotation, the resident should be
able to discuss various common diseases and the altered lung
patterns they produce, describe the characteristics of common
abnormal cardiac shadows and chamber enlargement, discuss the
various indications for ordering a chest CT, discuss the progression
of ARDS seen on ICU radiographs.
- Technical Skills: Recognize
and differentiate air space, lobular, and interstitial processes;
recognize CM and factors which may cause normal silhouette to appear
enlarged, identify anatomy and significant pathology as seen on ICU
chest films; know use and proper position of support catheters,
pacers, ETT, NG, IABP, LVAD, chest/mediastinal tubes.
- Decision-Making/Value Judgment
Skills: Identify examinations that are limited technically,
assist clinicians in choosing the most cost-effective work-up of
chest pathologies.
PGY III/IV
- Knowledge-Based Objectives:
All the above and at the end of the rotation, the resident should be
able to: name and describe unusual chest pathologies; correlate
pathological and clinical data with radiographic findings on the
chest film.
- Technical Skills: Read
routine chest films with a high level of accuracy and efficiency,
correlate with CT examinations.
- Decision-Making/Value Judgment
Skills: Accuracy in interpreting and dictating cases,
Identifying consistently his or her limitations, consult with
consulting physicians in regard to chest imaging procedures.
