Hundreds gather goodbye Dr. Howard

More than 200 friends, former patients and colleagues of the late Howard W. Jones, Jr. joined members of the Jones family at a memorial service Aug. 25 to pay tribute to the father of in vitro fertilization in the United States.

The gathering in Lewis Hall was adjacent to the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine at EVMS, the institute launched following the December 1981 birth of the first child in the United States conceived through in vitro fertilization.

Speakers at the memorial included a cross-section of individuals from Dr. Jones’ career, including baby number 1: Elizabeth Carr, now a mother herself. View footage from the memorial and learn more about the life of this medical pioneer.
