Hockey and diabetes are an unlikely pairing, but one that works. For the past six years, the EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center has joined forces with the Norfolk Admirals to host Diabetes Awareness Night at the Norfolk Scope. That’s because not too long ago, the Admirals had a star player, Cory Conacher, with a special connection to the Strelitz cause — he had type 1 diabetes.

While Mr. Conacher has moved on to play in the NHL, the Admirals’ dedication to raising diabetes awareness in the community has remained strong. This year’s event carried on the tradition of putting diabetes in check for Hampton Roads hockey fans. They lined up throughout the entire game to have their vitals checked.

For each ticket sold through EVMS, the Admirals plan to donate $4 to diabetes research at EVMS.
