Training Facility: Naval Medical Center Portsmouth
Norfolk is the home of the U.S. Navy's
Atlantic fleet and the world's largest naval base. As a result,
in nearby Portsmouth is the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP), a
major tertiary care facility for Naval personnel and their families. NMCP has its own psychiatry residency program, and we are lucky to
share resources with them.

In the second year, NMCP is a site for the child psychiatry
rotation. This site provides excellent supervision and great diversity
of young patients. The outpatient evaluation and follow-up clinics provide excellent training for our residents
alongside NMCP residents.
Residents in second year share three didactic classes with the NMCP
residents: family therapy, child psychotherapy, and group psychotherapy.
In the third year, residents may be assigned as co-therapists with NMCP residents for
a year-long psychodynamic psychotherapy group made up of active duty
personnel and dependents. Again, the group experience is marked by
excellent supervision from NMCP faculty.
EVMS medical students rotate through NMCP as well, providing
residents with the opportunity for teaching. |
