Psychiatry Residency Program

Didactic Curriculum

The didactic curriculum is continuous throughout residency training. Residents attend didactics one half-day per week. This time is protected; residents are excused from clinical duties in order to attend didactic lectures.

First-Year Didactic Courses

Didactic courses are held on Tuesday afternoons.
  • American Subcultures - two months
  • Behavioral Medicine - one month
  • Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapy - four months
  • ECT - one month
  • Emergency Psychiatry - two months
  • Ethics I - four weeks
  • Evidence-based Medicine Principles - one month
  • Introduction to Psychiatry - two months
  • Introduction to Psychodynamics - three months
  • Neurology - six months
  • Psychiatric Assessment - eight weeks
  • Psychiatric Interviewing - four months
  • Psychopathology - two months
  • Psychopharmacology I - four months
  • Research Design - two months
  • Supportive Psychotherapy - two months

Continuous Didactic Programs

  • Ongoing throughout second, third and fourth years
  • Held on Wednesday afternoons
  • Continuous Case Conference - first and third Wednesdays
  • Research Seminar - second Wednesday
  • Journal Club - fourth Wednesday

Second-Year Didactic Courses

  • Child Development - three months
  • Child Psychopathology - four months
  • Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry - two months
  • Eating Disorders - two months
  • Emergency Psychiatry - two months
  • Family Therapy - three months
  • Group Therapy - three months
  • Psychopharmacology II - two months
  • Psychodynamics II - seven months
  • Substance Abuse - eight weeks

Third-Year Didactics Courses

  • Community Psychiatry - one month
  • Forensic Psychiatry - two months
  • Neuropsychiatry - two months
  • Psychodynamics III - ten months
  • Short-term Psychotherapy - three months
  • Sociocultural Issues in Psychiatry - two months
  • Transition to Practice - two months

Fourth-Year Didactic Courses

  • Advanced Ethics - one month
  • Geriatric Psychiatry - one month
  • History of Psychiatry - one month
  • Managed Care - two months
  • Psychodynamics IV - ten months
  • Sleep Disorders - one month
