Clinical Psychology Internship Training Program

Rotation Site: Rehabilitation Medicine at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (SNGH) (Inpatient Rehabilitation Center and Day Rehabilitation Program)

Supervisor: Michael L. Stutts, Ph.D.

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital

This rotation provides interns with training across the spectrum of rehabilitation. Interns follow referred patients in the acute inpatient program which is characterized by a relatively short length of stay, a more rapid pace, and emphasis on brief assessments and short-term interventions with patients and families in the context of ongoing consultation with the interdisciplinary rehabilitation treatment team.

As SNGH is the major teaching hospital for EVMS and a Level I trauma center, the typical rehabilitation diagnostic categories are well-represented with stroke being the most common.

The inpatient training focuses more upon rehabilitation psychology and the intern's ability to adapt to the medical/hospital culture than upon neuropsychological evaluation. Interns also consult on an ongoing basis to the Day Rehabilitation Program elsewhere in the hospital and, in this setting, are afforded opportunities to conduct support groups and more comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations. Opportunities for conducting additional neuropsychological evaluations with rehabilitation patients are available through the EVMS Neuropsychology Center directly adjacent to SNGH.

Through the course of this rotation, interns participate in ancillary didactic sessions in addition to the six-month weekly seminar in clinical neuropsychology required of all interns. Interns also have the option of attending elective courses in adult and child neuropsychology offered through the local APA-accredited doctoral training program, as well as a postdoctoral-level neuropsychology seminar series.

Finally, interns on this rotation present to the seminar series for residents and faculty of the EVMS Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and may participate in ongoing research projects within the rehabilitation settings.
