Education
Research Interests & Funding The translation from preclinical data into advances in therapeutics has been a central theme in Dr. Williams' career. A classical education in pharmacy at the University of Michigan through a Ph.D. in Pharmacology at the Medical College of Virginia (now VCU) provided a solid foundation with the basic tools to build upon her early interests in how drugs worked and curiosity about factors affecting therapeutics from appropriate drug selection to patient compliance. She also is an invited speaker on issues regarding research integrity and has served as a consultant to the FDA and the NIH. Her active, funded research programs center on identifying therapeutic potential from basic pharmacologic research. She is a founder of the Thomas R. Lee Center for Ocular Pharmacology. Chartered by the EVMS Board of Visitors, it is the fifth Center for Excellence at EVMS. Since its inception in 1998, the Center has attracted a substantial financial support and developed into a nationally recognized site. The Center today is a multi-disciplinary coalition of clinicians and basic scientists. The mission of the Center is discovery of new knowledge to benefit patients with blinding eye disease, especially those with glaucoma. The major initiative at the Center is the application of emerging technologies to the treatment of glaucoma. Other programs address ocular wound healing, biodefense, dry eye, amblyopia, and photodynamic therapy. Prior to the funding of the TR Lee Center, she managed an active research program in cardiovascular pharmacology. Under her direction, notable advances were made in the effects of diabetes and of aging on collateral circulation. Honors and Awards
