EVMS Ophthalmology Residency

Facilities

Clinics are held at two primary hospitals:
Sentara Norfolk General HospitalSentara Norfolk General Hospital

This is the primary hospital on the Norfolk rotation. Clinic is held here on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. The focus of the clinic will change depending on the week of the month (1-4). Monday morning is general clinic on all Mondays of the month. Monday afternoon is pediatric clinic. Wednesday in the morning is surgical block time. Wednesday afternoon clinic only meets one time per month at Sentara for contact lens clinic, followed by uveitis. The remaining Wednesdays are at Portsmouth Naval Hospital for Grand Rounds with the Navy ophthalmologists.

Thursday is a specialty day and changes depending on the week of the month. Clinics on Thursday include glaucoma, retina, and pediatric ophthalmology. Friday is general clinic every week. Five lanes are available at Sentara for use by the residents, and two to four Ophthalmic Technology Program students assist with working up patients.

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital will be the primary source of consults for inpatient care, as well as the primary hospital served on call, approximately 70 percent of call patients come from this hospital. The Ophthalmology resident lounge and computer system are located in the eye clinic at Sentara as well as the residents' private library of ophthalmology textbooks and CD-ROMs.

Hampton VA Medical CenterHampton Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC)

The VA Medical center is approximately 18 miles from Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and has two full time faculty members. Dr Joy Robinson, M.D. is the chief of Ophthalmology, and Dr. Gay Tokomaru, O.D., is the Chief of Optometry.

Patient volume is heavy as the Norfolk area is the largest naval port in the United States. Clinic is held Monday - Friday. Tuesday and Wednesday mornings are block times for surgery for the chief resident, and Tuesday afternoon is retina clinic every week. Retina clinic is attended by a local medical retina ophthalmologist. The rest of the week is a mix of general patients. Periodically an optometry student or fellow will be working at the VA with the ophthalmology residents.
