EVMS Ophthalmology Residency

Curriculum

First Year

During the first year, each incoming resident is paired with a senior resident with whom he will rotate during the year. The schedule is as follows:

1st Year Resident A 1st Year Resident B
  • 3 months at Hampton VAMC
  • 3 months at Sentara Norfolk General
  • 1 month at Hampton VAMC
  • 1 month at Basic Science Course in Houston, TX
  • 1 month at Hampton VAMC
  • 2 months at Sentara Norfolk General
  • BEGIN 2nd Year Rotations in June
  • 3 months at Sentara Norfolk General
  • 3 months at Hampton VAMC
  • 1 month at Sentara Norfolk General
  • 1 month at Basic Science Course in Houston, TX
  • 1 month at Sentara Norfolk General
  • 2 months at Hampton VAMC
  • BEGIN 2nd Year Rotations in June

Monday

8 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. General Clinic
1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. CHKD Pediatric Clinic

Tuesday

8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Specialty Clinic

Wednesday

8 a.m. - 12 p.m. Surgery (CHKD)
1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Grand Rounds at Portsmouth Naval Hospital
Thursday 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. Specialty Clinic
1 p.m. - 5 p.m. Specialty Clinic
Friday 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. General Clinic
VA Rotation Schedule
(All at VAMC Hampton Unless Noted)
Monday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. General Clinic
Tuesday 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. Surgery
1:30 p.m. - 5 p.m. Retina Clinic
Wednesday 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. Surgery
1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Grand Rounds at Portsmouth Naval Hospital
Thursday 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. General Clinic
1 p.m. - 5 p.m. Specialty Clinic at Sentara
Friday 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. General Clinic

Second Year

Second Year Schedule is as follows:

  • 3 months Retina
  • 2 months Cornea
  • 6 months Pediatrics, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Plastics, Pathology
  • 1 month coverage of first-years while at Basic Science Course in  Houston, TX
Third Year

Each resident will rotate six months at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, and six months at the VA Medical Center, Hampton. The Sentara resident will function as chief resident. Each third-year resident will be paired with an incoming first-year with whom he will rotate for the year. The rotation schedule is as above for the first-year residents with the exception of attending the basic science course in Houston.
