Asked
Questions
If I already have an undergraduate degree (BS/BA),
what prerequisites do I need?
For those who have a BS/BA degree, all prerequisites are waived.
You will transfer your credits and enroll as a second- degree undergraduate student at Old Dominion
University. Financial aid, student services, etc. will be available to you.
What is the out-of-state tuition rate?
The Ophthalmic Technology Program follows Old
Dominion University's tuition fee schedule. The tuition fee schedule may be
found by going to the Office of Finance website at
www.odu.edu/af/finance. Financial aid is available through Old Dominion University
(www.odu.edu/af/finaid/index.shtml) and JCAHPO's Education and Research Foundation scholarship program
(www.jcahpo.org/newsite/foundation.htm).
Can I work during the program?
The Ophthalmic Technology Program is an intensive program that occupies
most of a normal work week. Part-time work is discouraged, especially during the first
semester. However, students have held part-time weekend jobs and have managed their
program obligations successfully.
Are there night or weekend courses?
No. The Ophthalmic Technology Program takes place during the normal
40-hour work week. We see patients and hold lectures during "normal" office hours.
Do I need a vehicle?
Yes. Ophthalmic Technology Program students travel to different hospitals
and private practice offices during the 22-month program.
Is on-campus housing available?
Yes. On-campus housing is available for
students enrolled at Old Dominion University. There are also many nearby housing
opportunities. Housing/roommate boards are located at the medical school and at
ODU.
What is the application deadline?
Priority will be given to those applications received by
April 1. We will, however, continue to receive applications through June. The
program begins in September.
