
The Clinical Skills Program
This intensive hands-on program gently guides the student through the skills needed to
become a highly effective member of an ophthalmic health-care team.
Students begin
patient interaction in their third week of training.

The Clinical
Skills Program |
Semester
I
|
Basic skills: vision taking, medical history taking,
retinoscopy, refractometry, slit lamp exam, lensometry, basic pediatric workup,
automated visual field exams, etc. in residency clinic setting. |
Semester
II
|
Advanced skills: retinal photography, anterior segment
photography, corneal topography, manual visual field exams, etc. in residency clinic setting. |
Summer
|
One-month externship in general ophthalmologist's
private practice, two months residency clinic setting continuing skill development. |
Semesters
III and IV |
Three-month rotations in each of the following:
Pediatric Evaluation, Contact Lens, Low Vision, Ophthalmic Surgical Assisting, Advanced Diagnostic Testing*
(includes A and B scan ultrasound, electrophysiology testing, fluorescein angiography, specular
microscopy, supervising, etc.) |
