Description:

The bio-repository is part of the Virginia Prostate Center and consists of three areas:  acquisition and processing lab, specimen storage facility and data-management office.

  • Acquisition and processing lab. This lab has an area of approximately 600 sq ft and has over 215 sq ft of benchtop space. Available equipment includes centrifuges, fume hoods, liquid nitrogen storage tanks and a sublimation platform which allows samples to be identified and sorted without thawing. An additional laboratory is adjacent to the acquisition and processing lab and it is used as a clinical research lab. It houses an Abbott IMX Immunoassay analyzer and an Abbot AxSym automated immunoassay analyzer.
  • Specimen storage facility. This facility is approximately 400 sq ft in area. It is environmentally controlled to provide a low temperature, low humidity atmosphere to maximize the life and cooling ability of the ten -80oC and one-40oC specimen long term storage freezers. A bar-coding system and protocol is available for maintaining de-identified data and for tracking usage.
  • Data management office. The data management office has four PC workstations, a 640 Gb network attached storage device (NAS, COCHRAN) and an SDLT Backup device house in the office. The workstations are connected to the EVMS network which consists of Novell, Unix and Windows-based servers. There are two additional servers dedicated to the core research group activities: a Dell PowerEdge 600 (CIPHEX), used as an Oracle database application server, and a dual Zeon server (PORTHOS), which provides high-speed analysis of data through a web-based interface. Desktop access and manipulation of data is provided by software programs such as Microsoft Office, Microsoft Visual Studio, Sigmascan, Sigmaplot, Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat, Jasc Paint Shop Pro, EndNote, Reflections and Monarch.
