Thomas R. Lee Center for Ocular Pharmacology

Research

The Center participates in several research programs ranging from basic pharmacology through clinical trials. The strength of the Center lies primarily in the translation of cutting edge technology into direct advances in patient care.

The major initiative at the Center is the pharmacologic modification of ocular tissues in glaucoma. This includes the development of new technology for chronic telemetric intraocular pressure monitoring in glaucoma. This will permit us to continuously monitor intraocular pressure in conscious, free roaming animals to evaluate the effect of drug therapy. Later, this technology may be extended to patients to improve patient care by permitting continuous monitoring of IOP on an out patient basis.

This technology will also be applied to our studies of cyclosporine-augmented trabeculectomy and trabeculoplasty and later to optic neuroprotective effects of novel anti-ischemic drugs including free radical scavengers and iron chelators.
