For Employees, Residents and Students:

Treat exposure site:  wash wound or skin exposure site with soap and water and flush mucous membranes with water as soon as possible.

Notify Eastern Virginia Medical School, Occupational Health Department that you have had an exposure:  call (757) 446-5870 or (757) 446-7105 during business hours (Monday-Friday 8:00 am-4:30 pm) or call the Exposure Pager at (757) 669-1157 after hours and on nights, weekends, and holidays.

Evaluate the type of injury/order lab work on source patient:

For a percutaneous injury (a.k.a. needlestick), non-intact skin, or mucous membrane exposure, obtain the history of the source patient including diagnosis, age, sex, history of transfusions, drug use, sexual partners, and if they have had a HIV test.

Notify the charge nurse and your attending physician that you've had an exposure.

Order or have the attending physician order baseline labs on the patient source (see  lab slip labeled "Patient Source" in the blue EVMS Expsoure Packet):

• HIV (Stat) Exposure
• HBsAG
• HBsAB
• Hep C AB
• Hep B Core AB

Get counseling for yourself:

If during business hours, report to Eastern Virginia Medical School, Occupational Health Department, in Andrew Hall, Suite #273.

If after hours and patient is HIV-positive, go to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Emergency Room for evaluation for preventative treatment.

If after business hours, report to the Occupational Health Department the next business day for counseling.  Baseline lab work is necessary only when the patient source tests positive for HIV, hepatitis B or hepatitis C.

Complete the following forms and send to EVMS Occupational Health:

  Uniform_Needlestick_and_Sharp_Object_Injury_Report.pdf for percutaneous exposures like needlesticks or cuts.

OR

Uniform_Blood__Body_Fluid_Exposure_Report.pdf for mucous membrane or non-intact skin exposures.

WC_Primary_Panel.pdf. for employees and residents to complete.  A workers' compensation claim will be filed.
