Department Emergency
Procedures for Blood/Body Fluid Exposure
- Treat exposure site: wash wound
with soap and water or flush mucous membranes with water as soon as
possible.
- Contact the Occupational Health
Department during
business hours at 446-5870 or 446-7105, or by pager at 584-0550 or
533-2595. Evenings, nights, weekends and holidays, call the EVMS
After-Hours Exposure Pager at 669-1157.
- Evaluate the source of exposure:
Obtain medical history of source patient including diagnosis,
previous HIV test results and date, age, history of transfusions,
drug use, sexual history, etc.
- Contact charge nurse and arrange
for source patient to be tested immediately. If at a Sentara
hospital, ask for an EVMS Exposure Packet (blue). Order stat HIV on
source patient as well as HBsAg, HBsAb, HBcAb, HCAb.
- Complete forms in packet to
document exposure.
- Report to Occupational Health to
receive counseling, baseline lab testing and prophylaxis if
indicated.
