Emergency Procedures for Blood/Body Fluid Exposure

  1. Treat exposure site: wash wound with soap and water or flush mucous membranes with water as soon as possible.
     
  2. Contact the Occupational Health Department during business hours at 446-5870 or 446-7105, or by pager at 584-0550 or 533-2595. Evenings, nights, weekends and holidays, call the EVMS After-Hours Exposure Pager at 669-1157.
     
  3. Evaluate the source of exposure: Obtain medical history of source patient including diagnosis, previous HIV test results and date, age, history of transfusions, drug use, sexual history, etc.
     
  4. Contact charge nurse and arrange for source patient to be tested immediately. If at a Sentara hospital, ask for an EVMS Exposure Packet (blue). Order stat HIV on source patient as well as HBsAg, HBsAb, HBcAb, HCAb.
     
  5. Complete forms in packet to document exposure.
     
  6. Report to Occupational Health to receive counseling, baseline lab testing and prophylaxis if indicated.
