A certified perinatal dietitian provides individualized dietary management when clinically indicated. All patients seeking obstetrical care in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine complete a detailed nutritional questionnaire upon enrollment for prenatal care, which is carefully reviewed by our perinatal dietitian in order to identify patients who may benefit from in-depth nutritional assessment and education.

Possible reasons for needing specialized nutritional counseling include:

  • Preconception counseling
  • Pregnancy condition (teens, multiple pregnancy)
  • Diabetes in pregnancy
  • Hyperemesis gravidarum (uncontrollable vomiting)
  • Excessive weight gain or loss
  • Vegetarianism
  • Eating disorders (e.g., anorexia nervosa or bulimia)
  • Hyperlipidemia (increased fat content in the blood)
  • Gastrointestinal disorders (e.g., Crohn’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease)
  • Hypertension
  • Anemia
  • Renal or liver disease
  • Endocrine disorders, such as osteoporosis and thyroid disease
  • Cancer
  • Sports nutrition
  • Food allergies
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Infant/child feeding
  • Breast feeding
