Sentara Norfolk General
Hospital (SNGH) is a 644-bed tertiary care facility
that is regionally and nationally known for many of its programs. It is
the region's main tertiary care center and the primary teaching
hospital for undergraduate and graduate education at EVMS. Special
services available include the Nightingale Air Ambulance, which serves
the hospital's busy Level I Trauma Center. The Heart Pavilion has
active programs in invasive and noninvasive cardiology, open-heart
surgery, heart and lung transplant, and cardiac rehabilitation. The
hospital also has an active kidney transplant service as well as
on-site programs in sleep medicine, epilepsy and oncology.
SNGH, with our other training hospital, Bon Secours DePaul Medical
Center (below), provides 3,000 deliveries annually for resident training. The
number and diversity of patients offer residents a high level of
responsibility including primary operative experiences. Our staffing of
the service is sufficient to permit adequate time for teaching
conferences and rounds, reflection, and inquiry. Our teaching faculty
and staff are readily available for consultation.

The Children's Hospital of The Kings' Daughters
(CHKD), a 186-bed tertiary care hospital, is the only pediatric
surgical facility in southeastern Virginia. In addition, CHKD has a
56-bed Level IV NICU. CHKD recently gained approval to increase its
NICU complement to 62 beds. The new beds are presently under
construction and will be available for occupancy shortly.
CHKD and Norfolk General offer our residents unique opportunities for
high-risk obstetrical training and pediatric care for children with
gynecological disorders and gynecologic complications from chronic
medical problems, such as gynecologic problems due to pediatric cancer
and renal transplantation. Our faculty and residents also care for
pediatric gynecologic trauma patients.

The
Howard and Georgeanna Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine
serves as the home office for our residents. Known for achieving the
first in vitro fertilization baby born in the United States, and more
recently, the development of the birth control pill, Seasonale, the
Jones Institute provides unparalleled opportunities for training and
patient care in infertility and reproductive medicine. The CONRAD
(Contraceptive Research Development) Program is the largest
contraceptive research grant funded in the U.S. ($100 million as of
2009).
Infertility procedures,
specialized reproductive surgeries, advanced reproductive technologies,
and clinical and laboratory research are conducted at this site.
We accept one fellow
annually in reproductive endocrinology. Graduates of our fellowship
program in reproductive endocrinology are dispersed over the country
and worldwide. The directors of the IVF programs at Harvard, Johns
Hopkins, Cornell, and other programs graduated from the Institute.

Established as an eight-room infirmary
to treat yellow fever victims in the late 1850s,
Bon Secours DePaul
Medical Center has grown to a highly respected 366-bed acute care
facility serving Norfolk. DePaul is a major teaching site for EVMS,
and a majority of the physicians on DePaul's medical staff hold
faculty appointments.
Inpatient and outpatient clinic
services offer excellent experience in normal and high-risk
obstetrics and in diagnostic and operative gynecology. Each resident
has ample opportunity to assume appropriate responsibility for
patient management and surgery.
Virginia Oncology Associates, with offices at DePaul Medical Center, exclusively cares for all gynecologic
oncology patients in the region. Our residents train with them during
the second through fourth years, learning all aspects of pre- and
postoperative care, while assisting with major gynecologic oncology
procedures, as well as complex gynecology surgery.
