Obstetrics/Gynecology
Residency Program
Resident Perspectives
|
In my free time, I
decorate my house and take my dogs for walks on the beach and in the
parks here. I like to go to Colonial Williamsburg and the Outer Banks
of North Carolina on my days off. I like the laid-back lifestyle of
this area. I like the different ways attendings manage obstetrical problems and
the exposure we get to all aspects of gynecology and high-risk
management. My husband is with the Navy; I am with him here. I have made many good
friends. Dana

I chose EVMS OB/GYN program simply because
of my previous research experience at the Jones Institute. My wife had a
position in EVMS as well, so that was another important factor in our
decision. We both like the Hampton Roads area, too.
The program has met my expectations in terms of availability and
friendliness of faculty. A positive educational environment is present
in contrast to an old-school hierarchic system. Education is also based
on an interactive hands-on experience rather than a passive one.
I like the fast-paced resident-friendly atmosphere; I get the most and
best experience here I think I could get anywhere.
Also, we like outdoor sports so my family and I love the climate.

There is more than one
reason why I considered EVMS highly in my rank of programs: I had the
feeling (that I corroborated as an intern) that foreign medical
graduates are welcome with equal opportunities. The prestigious Jones
Institute was also a good reason. The geographical surroundings
influenced, as well. But I think that the experience in high-risk
obstetrics was crucial in my decision, because I plan to pursue a
fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Definitively MFM is great at
EVMS, and the ambience among residents and attendings is friendly and
professional at the same time.

I chose the EVMS program because it was
the warmest welcome I received during my interview tour. I was impressed
by the faculty's honesty, interests, and diverse backgrounds. They, like our
Obstetrics Gynecology patients, share some very stress-laden moments
with us, the residents, yet give us some of the most exciting and
challenging experiences one can find in a career.
More objectively, if you seek to work in a
modern medical campus with a university-based residency program where
opportunities abound for becoming a great clinician, and you love to
reside in an urban to semi-rural setting with the beach just a mere
15-minute drive away, the EVMS program may be for you.

The
EVMS program is an academic one with a community feel – just what I
wanted. My interest in pediatric/adolescent OBGYN brought me here to
train in the Teen Clinic at EVMS and to learn from pediatric consults at
the Children’s Hospital. The attendings, residents, and staff are most
supportive. The residency office meets our needs and requests in a
heartbeat with a smile and cookies! I made the right choice! For my
residency training and for locale.

I
am amazed at the volume of patients and pathology we take care of in
this residency. As the referral base in northeastern North Carolina,
southeastern Virginia, and the eastern shore of Virginia for all high
risk obstetrics, we experience and learn from thousands of patients. I
am here with my husband and two children who love the area: the
excellent school system where my kids are thriving, the music program in
the public schools, the arts and entertainment, museums, and history. We
have family passes to Busch Gardens through the EVMS benefits program.
We are there often when are not attending a local festival, arts fair,
or event at the oceanfront. We love it here!

I
like the accessibility of the faculty and the interactions with the
academic and community Attendings who are eager to teach and support our
training. I was impressed, initially, with the attention that is paid to
Resident suggestions and satisfaction as a visiting- acting intern. I
have come to appreciate even more the way Resident suggestions are
incorporated to make the program even better. We have a cohesive,
diverse group of residents that on the whole, get along. With the
growing subspecialties, high risk obstetrics, and intimate faculty
involvement, it's an awesome environment to train in.

I
have been in Norfolk a couple of times before coming for an interview. I
enjoyed the city, the climate, the beach, and ocean. When I became a
resident, I found my fellow residents and faculty like a real family –
warm and supportive. I am very happy with my choice.
