Obstetrics/Gynecology
Residency Program
Curriculum - Descriptions of Rotations
Benign gynecology clinics occur in the
Hofheimer Hall gynecology offices and at the
Sentara Norfolk General
Hospital (SNGH) Ambulatory Care Center (ACC).
Structure
During this rotation, residents attend
two general gynecology clinics where they perform comprehensive office
gynecological examinations, office procedures and colposcopy. They see
geriatric patients, manage menopause and perform contraceptive
counseling. Residents learn to examine patients with common
gynecological problems to develop differential diagnoses and treatment
plans for such conditions as abnormal/dysfunctional uterine bleeding,
benign pelvic masses, infections of the vagina and vulva, problems of
the cervix, chronic pelvic pain, endometriosis, pathophysiologic
conditions of the breast, ectopic pregnancy and first-trimester
pregnancy loss. Clinics provide training in geriatric medicine,
pediatric and adolescent gynecology, precocious puberty and
pre-operative and post-operative care.
Residents learn principles of
gynecological surgeries, endometrial biopsy, the pathophysiology of HPV
and its role in abnormal Pap smears, indications for colposcopy, Pap
smear screening intervals and other treatment modalities for squamous
intraepithelial lesion.
The generalist division also provides
inpatient gynecology consultative services to the
Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters. Patients seen under
these circumstances often have underlying hematological, endocrine and
rheumatic disorders; thus, residents learn to treat children with
chronic medical conditions.
Teaching
Residents learn through didactics,
bedside teaching and hands-on experience while caring for patients on
the ambulatory and inpatient gynecology service.
Supervision
The gynecology generalists supervise
all outpatient and inpatient clinical activity.
