Course Description: This elective permits the assumption of greater patient responsibility on the part of the medical student, in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. This elective is recommended if a student is interested in pursuing a residency in OB/GYN and desire more in depth exposure to the specialty. The faculty will be pleased to attempt to tailor a program to the student’s particular interest, but the basic usual expectation should be advanced clinical management and reinforcement of cognitive material and problem-solving skills. The student will function as an “acting intern.”
Distribution of Student’s Effort: Patient Contact: 70% Inpatient, 30% Outpatient; 14 hrs/wk rounds; 7 hrs/wk conferences/lectures; 8 hrs/wk study/reading time; 10 hrs/wk faculty contact time
Objectives:
1. To increase and reinforce the basic core knowledge of Obstetrics and Gynecology as detailed in clerkship objectives.
2. To increase skills in clinical evaluation and management judgments.
3. To increase technical skills in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
4. To gain greater competence in ambulatory care and treatment.
Evaluation: 35% oral exam/case presentation; 65% clinical observation
