The Minority Affairs Committee serves as an advisory body to the Office of the Dean of EVMS, other appropriate administrative offices and committees. The Committee is charged with addressing the academic, socialization, and political concerns of the ethnic minority populations of EVMS. The Committee is comprised of a diverse group of EVMS clinical, basic sciences, and administrative staff.
The Student National Medical Association
(SNMA) was established in 1964 by students at Howard University School of Medicine and Meharry Medical College because of the need to produce an increasing number of skilled physicians to serve and be sensitive to the health care needs of minority and indigent patients.

The SNMA addresses issues in community health education, health care delivery, academic medicine, and also seeks to serve the fraternal needs of the minority medical student. The SNMA also exists for the purpose of increasing the levels of minority student recruitment, admissions and retention in medical schools across the nation.
The EVMS Chapter SNMA works closely with youth in the local school
systems and chapters of the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students
(MAPS) at colleges and universities for educating and mentoring students
at all educational levels for careers in medicine. The EVMS Chapter is
also actively involved in health promotion and disease prevention
activities in the local community. The SNMA provides health education
and free health screenings, working in partnership with community
physicians.
In addition to becoming a member of the American Medical Student Association, students are also encouraged to be active members of the EVMS Chapter of the
SNMA. For more information on the SNMA and its mission, visit
