Longitudinal Clinical Experiences
Optional learning experiences are available to provide the M4 students with a long-term continuity experience in patient care, based on patient populations:
- Family-centered Obstetrical Care
- Geriatrics
- Substance Abuse
- Urban Pediatrics
These experiences are designed to:
- Capture the benefits of continuity with patients, including the role of the provider/patient relationship in care, health promotion through patient education, and cost-effectiveness of continuous rather than episodic care; and
- Enhance the student’s patient management skills as the primary provider in a supervised ambulatory setting. Students’ experiences are monitored by the supervising faculty and through periodic assessments by the program coordinator.
Longitudinal Teaching Experience
M1 and M2 ITP Small Group Co-Facilitating M4 students who want to learn more about teaching while passing on to first- and second-year students some of the communication, history and physical exam skills can volunteer for this experience. Following an orientation to teaching in this context, M4 students work with faculty or residents as leaders of small groups in which M1 and M2 students begin to learn and practice their clinical skills.
