On the third Thursday of March each year, fourth-year medical students find out where they will continue the final phase of their physician training, a milestone known as Match Day.
Residency training is a required part of a medical education and prepares medical school graduates to practice medicine as independent physicians. Match Day is a festive, but emotion-packed, rite of passage observed at medical schools across the country. EVMS students celebrate in a unique way by decorating the auditorium and dressing up in costume according to a theme chosen each year.
En masse, the students open the envelopes that inform them of their matches with residency training programs. Match Day results are announced simultaneously at medical schools around the country.
