| Fellowship
Opportunities
The
Department of Medicine has approved fellowships in Endocrinology,
Geriatrics, and Infectious Disease. Approximately one third of our
residents pursue fellowships each year. Over the last eleven years, all
residents who have applied to fellowships have obtained a fellowship in
the field of their choice. Residents have gone to train in some of the
most prestigious fellowship programs throughout the United States,
including programs in Cardiology, Pulmonary/Critical Care,
Gastroenterology, and Rheumatology.
One of
the outstanding benefits that we offer our residents is to allow them to
perform "audition" rotations in subspecialties at other institutions
where they might apply for their fellowship. This gives our residents a
distinct advantage over most other fellowship candidates, who are
limited to being seen only at their home institution fellowship program.
Our residents can choose to perform their audition rotation almost
anywhere in the country; thus, program directors are able to see our
residents in action.
Research Opportunities
The
Department of Medicine has its own center for research. The services
provided by this outstanding resource make it quite easy for residents
to pursue research and other medical writing opportunities.
Residents
participate in a research project during their residency. All of our
residents present their findings at our yearly research day and submit
case and research abstracts to the regional and national American
College of Physician abstract competitions. Many of the residents also
present at regional and national venues. Our residents have won
significant awards for their work both at the regional and national
levels.
