Some Ways We Spend Our Free Time

Based on their experiences, combined faculty and residents put together the following “Free Time” activity suggestions for Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and the Hampton Roads area.

  • Baseball – taking in Tidewater Tides game (Met’s AAA Farm Team) at Norfolk’s Harbor Park, which overlooks the eastern branch of the Elizabeth River.

  • Rollerblading – on the seawall in Virginia Beach.

  • Opera – attending a performance of the Virginia Opera Company at the Harrison Opera House in downtown Norfolk.

  • Bicycling – through First Landing State Park located on the oceanfront in Virginia Beach or along the Colonial Parkway between Yorktown, Williamsburg, and Jamestown.

  • Basketball - attending an Old Dominion Lady Monarchs basketball game.

  • Cinema – walking to the Naro Theater in Ghent (Norfolk) to see a highly acclaimed foreign film or eating dinner while watching a recent release at the Commodore Theater in Portsmouth.

  • Social Hour – getting together once a month on Friday evenings for a residency-sponsored social hour with residents and faculty.

  • Summer Concert Series – sitting on a blanket by the world’s largest natural harbor watching coal colliers and aircraft carriers go by while listening to the Continental Army Band play at historic Fort Monroe, a short drive from downtown Norfolk.

  • Grand Illumination – visiting Williamsburg to celebrate the lighting of the holiday decorations (50 minute drive from Norfolk).

  • Mariner's Museum – touring one of the worlds’ foremost maritime museums in Newport News, VA (30 minutes from Norfolk). The museum is located on the James River and a wooded trail located on the property makes for a nice walk.
