Conferences Research

morning_report

We offer an extensive array of conferences for our residents and the program views these as essential to successful training. Conference times with adequate backup are arranged so that residents can easily attend over 85 percent of these presentations. The following describe our resident conferences.

Morning Report: 8am daily, except Wed

A medical case is presented by inpatient teams or residents on electives.  Discussions are guided by the Chief Resident, Ward attendings and subspecialists.

Core Didactic Lecture Series: Wed, noon-4p.

Lectures are presented covering a core curriculum on a variety of topics geared toward preparation for the Internal Medicine Boards.  Taught by subspecialists, full-time, and community faculty.  Each afternoon is begun with a series of board-style questions pertinent to the afternoon’s lectures.  Lunch is provided.

Medical Grand Rounds: Wed, 8am

Traditional conference presented by guest lecturers, subspecialists and EVMS faculty on cutting edge topics as they pertain to our practice as Internists.

Medical Jeopardy: Monthly

A fun way for residents to review important topics.  But, watch out!  Things can get competitive!

Journal Club: Monthly

Residents evaluate and critically analyze key articles in medical literature and learn evidence-based medicine skills.

Morbidity and Mortality Conference: Monthly

Cases are discussed in an effort to identify learning opportunities as well as improve patient care.

Show and Tell Conference: Monthly

Unique findings in radiology, EKGs, pathology, and physical exam are presented by inpatient wards teams.

Housestaff Meeting: Monthly

Rotations of the residents are reviewed and discussed.  New information regarding residency activities/rotations is disseminated.  Conducted by the Program Director.

Subspecialty Conferences: Available during elective months.  Includes Cardiology, Infectious Disease, Endocrine and Geriatric Medicine, among others.

GME Conference: Quarterly

Presented by the Graduate Medical Education Department.  This conference is attended by housestaff in all residency programs.  Topics include patient safety and quality improvement.

Research:

All residents design and conduct an individual, IRB-approved research project during their residency.  The Department of Internal Medicine has its own center for research known as OPERA (Office for Promotion of Excellence in Research and Academia).  The primary function of OPERA is to provide residents support and guidance through the research process.  Able to provide all levels of support, having a dedicated office for research is an outstanding resource for residents and faculty alike.  All of our graduating residents present their findings at our yearly research day.

In addition to research, all residents prepare abstracts for state and national conferences.  In 2008-2009, four residents were selected to present their abstract at the ACP Associates Conference, with one resident being selected to present at the State ACP meeting.  In addition, five residents were selected to present their abstract at the National ACP conference.  Four residents presented abstracts at the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) meeting last year. Multiple individual residents have presented their research at relevant national subspecialty meetings and the department is very supportive of these endeavors.
