program of Eastern Virginia Medical School and Old Dominion
University

Our graduates are
prepared to bridge the gap between discovery in the art of
medicine and the current frontiers of technology in
science. | Overview
Since 1980, Old Dominion University
(ODU) and Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) have collaborated
to jointly sponsor the Ph.D. Program in Biomedical Sciences.
Coursework is offered at both institutions, as well as laboratory
experiences culminating in a dissertation project. Over 70 faculty
members from the sponsoring institutions participate in the
program.
Students initially complete courses
that provide a breadth of knowledge spanning the biomedical
sciences. Using this knowledge, specific biomedical problems are
studied in depth through advanced courses and research. Under the
guidance of selected graduate faculty, the diversity provided by the
spectrum of biomedical sciences is maintained throughout the focus
on an area of specialization.
Our graduates are prepared to bridge
the gap between discovery in the art of medicine and the current
frontiers of technology in science, and have gone on to careers in
academia, industry and government where their interdisciplinary
background has provided a unique perspective.
The Sponsors
Old
Dominion University is the largest educational institution
in southeastern Virginia. It is an urban university with the primary
mission of meeting the educational and professional needs of its
students and the region through excellence in teaching, scholarly
research and leadership in community service. It offers a broad
range of undergraduate and graduate programs leading to Master's and
Ph.D. degrees. It is regional in nature, attracting students from
Tidewater and the eastern seaboard.
Eastern Virginia
Medical School is the largest biomedical research institution in
southeastern Virginia, as well as part of the area's largest medical
center complex. In addition to training medical and other health
professions students, EVMS has a number of
research
institutes and clinical
programs that interface with the
basic
science departments. The integration of clinical and basic
sciences is an important component of research programs, as well as
the biomedical sciences graduate program.
Educational Format
The Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. Program
provides pre-doctoral students with a foundation of general
biomedical sciences interdisciplinary training, followed by a high
level of professional training in the advanced aspects of specific
biomedical sciences and in research philosophy and
techniques.
