Spencer Powers
Class of 2002

My name is Spencer and I’m an alumnus of Eastern Virginia Medical School’s Graduate Art Therapy Program.

To say my graduate training in Art Therapy has opened many doors is an understatement. In fact, aside from my full-time job with a Richmond-area adolescent substance-abuse drug court and prevention program, I’ve had to turn down many part-time offers.

Before enrolling at EVMS, I worried that I wouldn’t be able to pay off my student loans, but I’ve found that I’ve been able to have a comfortable life. I interviewed for my first job before graduation and began work two weeks later.

One of my favorite parts of the program was how much time they spend preparing us for job interviews and how to market ourselves. Faculty members were always available for individual time and are known and respected nationally for their clinical work and research in the field. It was also refreshing to have my own studio space to escape to! Collectively, my experiences at EVMS are among the most powerful and worthwhile of my life. It has proven to be the best investment I’ve ever made.
